These Olympians were given no slack, even in just the team and individual qualifying round here at the Rio Olympics. They were given a time of just 80 seconds, which kept all the riders making tidy turns and staying on a forward stride. We got to see the strong communication that flows between horse and rider through every turn. These top athletes were riding aggressively and actively to keep their equine partner balanced and ready for the next obstacle. Horses sprang up from strong hind legs and soared over colorful single fences as well as lengthening and heaving themselves to clear the wide Olympic spread.

Riders had to complete a 12 obstacle course with 15 individual fences. Many horses were tricked coming off a short turn then facing the open water immediately followed by a solid looking wall. Riders needed to be smart riding a wide triple bar oxer the lead straight to a short triple combination. By galloping around extra space and making tight turns, riders were taking fences at odd angles and often landing out on their turns. Despite this, we saw some beautiful partnerships whose rounds were so smooth and seemingly effortless. We also witnessed the opposite when rider-horse duos fought and resisted throughout the course often leading to refusals or rails.

We watched the youngest Olympic showjumping competitor Reiko Takeda of Japan, just 19 years old finish her round with only 4 jumping penalties. Then we saw as Amy Millar of Canada continued the Olympic tradition of her father “Captain Canada” in the Millar family’s 11th Olympic appearance. She put in a clear round aboard her 9 year old mount, Heros, at the minimum age allowed for a competing equine.
