imageUnder the watchful eye of Elvenstar trainer, Kay Altheuseur, this year’s LAHJA Horsemastership competitors are getting in on special studying opportunities. Last Tuesday night, you could find this group of riders gathered in the clubhouse above the barn. Spread on the table before them were anatomical worksheets, practical horsemanship manuals, and study snacks of course! Practice makes masters, right? Last week this group went over everything one needs to know to be a successful horsewoman.  The night was full of reviewing tack and how it is used, labeling parts of a horse, and taking the online Horsemanship Quiz Challenge Practice Quiz presented by USEF.

The following Sunday, 2016 Horsemastership riders were presented with an even more unique option. These competitors were invited to join local vet Kristen Brown in the trainer’s lounge to talk about proper horse veterinary language. Kristen came prepared with an enormous handbook highlighting every part of the horse’s body as well as three different models of a real horse’s leg. She pointed out bone structures, tendons and ligaments. They talked about common vaccination schedule and what symptoms of common health issues you should be looking for on a daily basis. Riders got to participate in lengthy discussions about taking preventive actions and keeping your horse in the best possible shape. They even took a break to feel the legs of the real horse, Clic Clac, so they could put their textbook knowledge to test in a real world application. The afternoon finished discussing Kristen’s own background as a veterinarian and local rider who grew up learning right here at Elvenstar!
