Starting September 1st 2016, a new limit has been put in place on the number of classes a rider is allowed to compete in for both the US Hunter Seat Medal and the ASPCA Maclay medal classes during a single qualifying period. According to the new rule, riders are only allowed to compete in 14 qualifying classes unless they have still not qualified after riding in 14 classes, in which case that rider may continue to compete but only until the rider accumulates enough points to qualify. This rule is being put in effect to keep riders who are already qualified from continuing to ride in qualifying classes thus allowing others to compete and qualify during the entire qualifying period. Further, it states “Any rider in his or her final junior year may not compete in any qualifying classes held at a competition with a start date after August 31 of that competition year.”

Additionally, this rule change allows half points to be awarded for classes with three to five riders who complete the course. This means that even if one or more riders are eliminated in a class that has filled with 6 competitors, the riders who successfully completed the course will be awarded partial qualifying points for their efforts. Previously, if this situation occurred the points each rider earned would not count for qualification and the class would be pinned as an equitation class.
